Rewilding is a compilation of works weaved together by Michèle Karch-Ackerman and Tanya Zaryski. The exhibition is comprised of The Library of Dresses, a year-long exploration that involved stitching a wardrobe of dresses to honour deceased female authoresses that inspired Karch-Ackerman, and the bountiful and lush paintings of Zaryski’s isolation fueled longing for connection with friends, explorations of fairy tale lore, imaginative play, and the ‘rewilding’ of her childhood and self. Both are women and mothers, committed to an art practice that tugs at the heartstrings and explores love, nature, memory and narrative. This body of work is the culmination of a year’s worth of work and playful discovery; and many long conversations about creative process, motherhood, love, loneliness, fairy tales, and the idea of rewilding. Zaryski’s Rewilding series plays with animal companions and guides, embedded with quests and magical narratives that at first glance appear attractive and charming, but upon further inspection are not entirely safe. Intertwined with Karch-Ackerman’s Library of Dresses paying homage to authors such as Jane Austen, Mary Shelley and Emily Dickinson, the works dovetail, transporting audiences to speculative worlds of fiction, possibility and healing.

The Grimsby Farmers’ Market runs every Thursday on Main Street (between Christie and Ontario St).
The market was established in response to a growing demand by the residents of Grimsby to enjoy the freshness of “home-grown” products from the Niagara Region. Set up as a “Homegrown” Market, our vendors grow their own product and take the time to answer all the questions of the shoppers at the market.
The market runs rain or shine for the entire season.
The market is run by a steering committee comprised of 4 market vendors, a community member and overseen by the Market Manager. The steering committee helps sort out new vendors each year by annually reviewing all vendor applications. They also assist in any disputes that may arise. The steering committee members are elected by the market membership and sit for a three-year term.

Be prepared to be Saved by the Beep with a working smoke alarm – it is your best chance to keep you and your family safe in the event of a fire.
On September 28, please take a minute to ensure that there are working smoke alarms installed in your home.
Last year, Ontario lost 133 people to deadly fires – the highest number in over 20 years. Many of these fires were found to have no working smoke alarm and stand as a reminder that only working smoke alarms will alert you to a fire and give you and your loved ones enough time to safely escape.
The Office of the Fire Marshal is asking all of us to regularly test our smoke alarms with a challenge to test all smoke alarms in our residence on September 28.
Quick Facts:
·Smoke alarms have been legally required to be installed on every storey of a residence in Ontario since 2006.
·Residences also include vacation homes, cabins, trailers, RVs, and cottages.
·Landlords must test alarms annually, after the battery is replaced, and after every change in tenancy. Renters must notify their landlord as soon as they become aware that a smoke alarm is not operating.

Please join Grimsby Public Art Gallery Saturday, September 30 for the unveiling of a custom artwork created by renowned Niagara based artist, Leona Grandmond Skye, in response to, and accompanying, the Town of Grimsby’s land acknowledgement. Skye is also highly respected for her work and staunch advocacy on anti-human trafficking and its connection to Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and 2 Spirit People, who are exceptionally vulnerable to being victimized by this crime at a much higher rate. As a survivor, Skye will speak to human trafficking and Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women in connection to the Region while dispelling misinformation and myths surrounding one of the fastest growing crimes in Canada at this event. The talk will be followed by a screening of “Sister Round Dance Song”, an honour song dedicated to Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women written and performed by Nikki Shawana. READ MORE

In the early 1900’s, during the height of daredevil activity surrounding Niagara Falls, one woman surprised everyone. Confined in only a whisky barrel, padded with a few pillows, Annie Edson Taylor became the first person to successfully plunge over the brink of the Horse Shoe Falls and survive.
But what was her overall intention? In search of financial stability, Annie resorted to the most challenging entrepreneurial endeavor; challenging nature. In the shadow of her male counterparts - even with the Falls on her side - success was destined to be unattainable.
To play a daredevil’s advocate pays tribute to Annie and her performance, while asking the viewer to consider their individual relationships with this natural wonder. At what point has the Falls been positioned as a trophy or celebrity you need to photograph yourself next to? Or beat in a match? Where does this inherent desire to challenge the Falls come from? At some point in time this perspective stuck - do we have the need to feel superior to the Falls or recognize our inability to.

Join SCPL and Brock University each month for an engaging and often revelatory dive into history, culture, or the arts. Each month features a different lecture from a Brock University professor.
There is widespread agreement that critical thinking is something we need a lot more of. There is far less agreement about what exactly critical thinking is. Its skills and virtues are often described and taught as individual reasoning skills and virtues. Critical thinking is assimilated to a kind of cognitive rugged individualism, in much popular wisdom – stay off the bandwagon! be sceptical! do your own research! But there are good reasons to regard critical thinking also as a social achievement, requiring trust, deference, and cooperation to be performed reliably. In his Brock Talk, Dr. Kenyon will discuss the roles that social skills and communities play in critical thinking, and how we can help build these for ourselves and others.

Julia's Hope Cup is a celebration of the life of Julia Turner and her humanitarian spirit, while raising funds in support of The Hope Centre. This family event is open to anyone in the Welland community and is FREE to attend.
Years ago, Paul Turner created the Hope Cup Pond Hockey Tournament to raise money for the Hope Centre. Red Dress Day began in 2010 as the REDress project, initiated by Métis artist Jamie Black. The project brings awareness to the ongoing tragedy of race-based violence across Canada and the United States, which has resulted in thousands of missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls, and Two-Spirit people.
The REDress Project has since evolved into a national movement. Now, every year on May 5, red dresses are hung in public spaces around the country as a call for justice for the victims and their loved ones. The empty dresses are a visual representation of the pain and loss felt by the families of victims and act as stand-ins for the staggering number of people who have been murdered or go missing each year.

Beaverdams Methodist Church opened in 1832 but by 1840 with the completion of the second Welland Canal, mills began to be built between the two lakes and people moved to where the new jobs were hence decimating the Beaverdams population. The church struggled on and by 1890 the congregation disbands with only the Sunday School continuing until the mid 1980’s.
Seeing that the church was in such poor condition, some well meaning people got together and started “The Friends of the Beaverdams Church” knowing that if something wasn’t done soon the church building would no longer exist. In 2013 a not for profit corporate status was granted to the organization and in 2014 the church and its cemetery were purchased from the City of Thorold for $2. and the massive fundraising and restoration began. Through many yearly fundraisers and donations from 2014 to the present the church was completed on the outside and inside. You can follow “The Friends of the Beaverdams Church” on Facebook to see when their fundraisers are taking place and get a chance to see all the photos of the restoration that has taken place inside and outside the church.

For nearly a decade, Spencer Mackenzie has been writing and recording true blues, showcasing the raw emotion and honesty the genre demands. There’s a familiarity and ease with which he approaches the music, almost as though it flows through rather than from him. In song, he connects with the storied past of blues music, lyrically navigating through his pain to find purpose and the promise of tomorrow. The energy of his work is infectious, permeating through the listener until they, too, feel the heartbeat of the blues.

Speaker: Dr. Angus Smith (Department of Classics & Archaeology)
Since the early 1990’s, Dr. Angus Smith has been participating in archaeological excavations in the Mirabello Bay of Crete in Greece. His focus has been on reconstructing the past of the ancient Minoans, a Bronze Age culture of early Greece sometimes referred to as the ‘First Civilization of Europe.’ As an archaeologist, it is necessary to reconstruct history from tangible fragments of the past, and the particular fragments that are Dr. Smith’s specialty are sherds – broken bits of ancient pottery. Most recently, Dr. Smith has been studying sherds from the Minoan town of Gournia, which is the best preserved and most completely excavated town of the Minoan world.
Why are sherds so important for archaeologists and what can they tell us about the lives of people in the past? How do archaeologists study them, and why would someone devote their life to the study of what is essentially ancient trash? This talk will begin to answer these questions as they pertain to both the ancient Minoan civilization of Greece and to Dr. Smith. Examples of ancient sherds from the Brock University Cypriote Museum will be brought to the library so participants can try their hand at ceramic analysis and hopefully discover their inner ‘sherd nerd’!

For some people of African descent, NiagaraFalls was home and a safe place to work and live. For others, the city was a crossing point over the last barrier to freedom – the Niagara River. By boat, freedom seekers were buffeted by mist and rain, were rocked and tossed as they rowed past the falls into freedom in Canada. By bridge, freedom seekers from all over the United States funneled towards Canada aboard trains. For the Black waiters of the Cataract House, they escorted thousands of individuals across the river behind the elegant facade of a grand hotel.
